Guidelines

  • I am new to the nautical sector, how do I start working at sea?

    The first step to work in the nautical sector is to take the Basic Maritime Safety Training Course (STCW95) and choose between the national or international Maritime Passport. Your previous experience counts even if it is in a sector other than boating.

  • Is my previous experience important?

    Yes, any previous experience in other fields of work matters, as face-to-face experience is valued.

  • What should I consider before applying for work at sea?

    It is essential to be in possession of the Basic Training Certificate in Maritime Safety - STCW95, in order to apply for the Maritime Passbook or DIM (Seafarer's Identification Document), a seafarer's identity document exclusively for foreign or extra-national navigation.

Requirements

  • I want to work as a Skipper or Captain, what do I need?

    First you have to pass the PER - Patrón de Embarcaciones de Recreo (Recreational Boats Skipper) exam and take the compulsory motor navigation and Radio Communications course. Once in possession of the PER, you can take the Yacht Skipper exam and do the compulsory navigation practices. The next license is the Yacht Captain, essential to be able to take the PPER exam - Professional Yacht Pattern. It is possible to work with the title of Yacht Skipper or Captain, before obtaining the PPER, as long as the Basic Training in Maritime Safety has been completed and the title of Skipper or Captain is presented to the Maritime Captaincy, with the attached Qualifications (certified sailing practices). The difference is that with the Skipper and Captain you can only carry 6 passengers on board and sail a maximum distance of 5 miles from the coast, port or place of shelter, while with the PPER you can carry up to 12 passengers and sail up to 60 miles from the coast.

  • What I need to become a Mariner

    The Basic Maritime Safety Training Course (STCW95), register the course certificate at the Capitanía Marítima to obtain the Maritime Passbook or DIM (Seafarer Identification Document), and apply for the medical examination for embarkation aptitude at the Instituto Social de la Marina (ISM).

  • I want to work on a cruise ship, what do I need?

    It is necessary to have a good level of English, pass a personal interview with the shipping company, have a valid passport and pass a medical examination of Fitness for Boarding. In addition, they are required to take the courses of Basic Training in Maritime Safety, Passenger Vessels (RO-RO) and Maritime Security. And contact the shipping company to find out what qualifications are required for each one.

    It is not necessary to have previous nautical experience, although work experience in the customer service and tourism sector will increase the chances of being taken into account.

Courses

  • Courses required to work on different types of ships

    To work as a deckhand, cook, entertainer..., on charter yachts you only need the Basic Maritime Safety Training Course (STCW95). If you want to choose to work on ferries or cruise ships, then the Passenger Vessel and Maritime Security courses are also required. Some shipping companies require other specialty certificates depending on the position you want to apply for, such as Engine Seaman or Bridge Seaman.
